Hudson Valley Bands Top Tips
FIND OTHER MUSICIANS
Open Mike – Lots of local music venues have weekly open mike nights and these can be one of the best places to meet other musicians. Not only are there always solo musicians of all shapes and sizes to see showcasing their talents. But you might get a chance to sit in with some of the best local talents around.
Karaoke – Most bands have a hard time finding a vocalist for their project and one of the best places to scout out potential talent is at Karaoke. The number of venues hosting Karaoke nights has dwindled over the last decade but there are still lots of places to check out.
Post Flyers – This old fashion marketing strategy still is very effective and can sometimes bring you what you are looking for. From grocery stores to music stores most have a bulletin board and other musicians might see your flyer and wala! Be creative and be sure to give them an easy way to contact you. Business cards attached to a flyer can work well of even designing the flyer to have little paper slips with your name and number at the bottom to rip off is handy!
Craigslist – Anyone who has turned to Craigslist to find like-minded musicians knows first hand that it can be one of the best and worst places to find local talent. Many perennial posters with the same reworded ads. But the reality is that any place you try to locate people is luck of the draw in terms of who is available at that particular point in time and if you generally are on the same page and hit it off.
Hudson Valley Music – One of the best local online resources for musicians in the Hudson Valley. The website showcases a good calendar collection of local upcoming events. Their classifieds contain lots of local musicians looking for others to join up with. Check out what they have to offer and bookmark their website for future visits.
Bandmix – A national directory of local talent from all over the country with a relatively good database of local talent and musicians. There are some active members of this directory and is worth a look but, in our experience, most of the listings are older and inactive. But even then you can try to link up and see where their current situation is.
Facebook Groups – If you search Facebook groups you can find many various specific groups for anything and everything. The larger ones have thousands of Facebook user members that will see your posts once you join as long as you meet the group guidelines!
